San Jose Falls to Real Salt Lake
The San Jose Earthquakes concluded their 2024 home schedule with a narrow 1-0 loss to Real Salt Lake at PayPal Park. After a scoreless first half, RSL's Diego Luna scored the decisive goal in the 78th minute with a left-footed strike from the edge of the box. San Jose had key chances, including a close header from Rodrigues and a late opportunity by Preston Judd, but failed to capitalize. Despite valiant efforts by goalkeeper Daniel, who recorded five saves, and the defensive unit, the Quakes couldn't find an equalizer. The loss snapped their unbeaten home streak against RSL.
Reflecting on the match, interim head coach Ian Russell acknowledged strong moments in the team’s play but noted missed opportunities in creating high-quality chances. Forward Paul Marie emphasized the team’s gratitude to fans for their unwavering support throughout the season and shared plans to improve both individually and collectively in the offseason. The Quakes close their 2024 campaign on Oct. 19 against LAFC in Los Angeles.
